CASE STUDY: An exercise in employee safety and efficiency.
CUSTOMER PROFILE
A large national retail grocer utilizes leading e-commerce technology to support their omni-channel customer segment of local brands.
THE CHALLENGE
The grocer sought to increase the number of orders per batch pick to drive pick efficiency. They also wanted to provide a safe working environment for their associates. The goal was to
double the size of the batch pick, which was not ergonomically feasible with the current solution due to the additional weight. The operator pick rates diminished over the course of a shift and became a burden for the pickers.
THE SOLUTION
The grocer turned to Cannon Equipment and their team of engineers to help devise solutions to meet their goal of
increased efficiency and employee safety. Cannon Equipment worked with the customer to develop several prototype units for use in their picking operations. The first internally powered cart was developed for a larger payload as initial testing proved that a longer cart was feasible and practical.
IN-STORE PILOT
Cannon Equipment delivered two units to the customer for a comprehensive pilot test. The local team was thoroughly trained to ensure safe and comfortable use prior to beginning the assessment. After the initial break in period and further performance adjustments, they found the cart to provide a significant improvement to pick rates. The national grocer plans to expand and use the powered cart to the other pick areas of the operation.
