Cannon Equipment holds safety and ergonomics as its highest priority. Training on incorporating safety and ergonomic needs into our design process has been conducted by an outside consultant. The outside consultant conducts ongoing safety and ergonomic training to help educate our engineers which provides guidance during final design stages.

The safety of the people who operate and maintain our equipment is always priority one as we design and build our machines and systems. Existing machines are reviewed on a regular basis, looking for areas that could be improved. On new designs, safety and risk assessment are part of every design review. The finished machine is audited for safety by a group of technical experts prior to shipping.

Cannon Equipment complies with all applicable safety standards as required, including the following:

  • ANSI Z535.4 Safety Label Standard
  • CSA Z432-04 Safeguarding of Machinery
  • ANSI/RIA R15.06-1999 Safety Requirements-Industrial Robots & Robot Systems
  • EN 954-1 Safety of Machinery
  • UL 508a Standard for Industrial Controls
  • National Electric Code

The following are standard features on all machines built by Cannon Equipment:

  • Lockable disconnects are provided for all power sources
  • All HMI’s and control panels are designed to be intuitive and easy to operate
  • All guards requiring operator access are interlocked using dual channel safety switches
  • All Emergency Stops are hardwired directly through a Master Control Relay
  • Remote grease lines are provided where access to zerk fittings is difficult or potentially unsafe
  • All electrical components are “finger safe”

Cannon Equipment takes ergonomic concerns very seriously and has spent time evaluating each equipment piece for ergonomic standards (must accommodate the 5% female to 95% male demographic in the workforce). For instance, some areas that are reviewed are:

  • Electrical assembly panel heights
  • Lifting and bending locations/heights
  • Weight of a part

Recently ergonomics has been a hot topic in many industries due to the increase in musculoskeletal injuries and the costs associated with them.

The origin of the word ergonomics comes from the Greek words, “ergon” which means “work “and “nomos”, which means “the study of”. Today Ergonomics is best defined as “the study of the interaction of people with their work environment”. This includes not only the physical space we work in, but also the furniture, equipment, tools and machines that are used to complete essential work tasks. Today, more than ever, employers have begun to develop ergonomic initiatives because they see the advantage of how operating in an ergonomically based manner brings benefits to their employees and the company.
